Naruto Shippuuden 219 Breakdown: This may just be the funniest episode in the anime so far.

Ah yes… it has been quite some time since I last entered the chaotic realm of words and letters, thoughts and ideas, a journey where one traverses the twisting corridors of their own mind-scape in a desperate search to bring meaning to the words that express their innermost feelings. To put it in plain English for those who don’t understand my deep lingo, it has been a long time since I have had to think this hard, and I tell you what, right now my brain feels like it is obscenely overweight.

But, you didn’t come here for my mindless (or mindful?) ramblings. You came here for an anime breakdown (or perhaps even to assassinate me0, and what better way to make my belated return than with the comical misadventures of our favorite jounin duo, Kakashi and Gai?

I sense... a great deal of friction between these two... <_<

Alright, so before we get ahead of ourselves, let’s start our story at the very beginning, shall we? Although this episode does largely focus on Kakashi and Gai, it begins with a brief – but still important – dialogue between the members of Konoha’s finest younger generation and Naruto, which is a subsequent result of the latter’s somewhat violent encounter with Sasuke a few episodes beforehand.

Despite enduring a rather ruthless interrogation by his peers (any amount of whining from Tenten could be considered a torture comparable to one of Ibiki’s best techniques) Naruto defends his decision to handle Sasuke on his own despite the numerous protest of those around him. Quite frankly, it seems a bit odd to me that everyone has been putting their faith in Naruto, but now suddenly they don’t think he can handle the matter on his own, but I guess that’s politics for you. However, one particular subject that still intrigues me about this scene – even since its debut in the manga – is that at the end of it, we are left with a feeling that Naruto is hiding something important that he isn’t telling anyone.

So, the real question is, does he really intend to die with Sasuke or kill his friend himself, or does he have something else up his sleeve that he can’t mention to anyone else?

Tenten's opinion. It holds about as much weight as a fart in the middle of a sewer.

Moving along, the rest of this episode mostly focuses on Kakashi’s rather precarious situation in which he finds himself obligated to fill the role of the next Hokage for Konoha, seeing as how Tsunade’s rather inconvenient descent into a coma and Danzou’s death at the hands of Pigeon Boy left the top spot glaringly empty.

However, before our favorite silver-haired jounin is given a moment to ponder on the future responsibilities that he has unwillingly incurred, his eternal rival, Maito Gai, decides to present him with a “Hot Challenge” for old-time’s sake.

It’s… steamy…. <_<

There's nothing like a passionate bromance to help you remember the taste of that breakfast you ate a few hours ago. ^ ^

Now, from here on out, the rest of this episode can practically be written off as filler content, because that is exactly what it is. Although most people run around screaming at the mere mention of the word ‘filler’, I have to say that this episode easily shines far above the mediocrity that taints most other filler episodes. Simply put, it is hilarious and Gai is definitely the star of the show who manages to bring it all together – although Kakashi most certainly helps a great deal by playing along with the Green Beast’s challenge with an almost equally comical return.

As far as production quality goes, I would say that the animation – although somewhat zany – suits the episode quite perfectly. It feels rushed and chaotic and you’ll see bodies contort in ways that suggest that they have the consistency of a liquid, but this all adds to the light-hearted humor this episode fights ever so diligently to convey.

Is it absurd? Definitely, but also rightly so.

And here we have a glimpse of the new Konoha being rebuilt in the very crater that Pein created with his Shinra Tensei. It makes you wonder what will happen when the rainy season starts...

If you do decide to watch this episode, then prepare to witness the likes of a Loony Toon’s-esque race down a dirt mountain, a midair battle with kitchen utensils and hurdles across rooftops to name but a few set pieces.

If you are particularly against the likes of filler episodes or if you don’t like that kind of exaggerated zaniness, or even if you just happen to have a large stick with splinters stuck up the dark recesses of your nether regions, then by all means, skip this one out, but I would still suggest giving it a try just for the fun of it.

After all, you wouldn’t want to miss the climax. 😉

And that is where I will leave you all for now. *Snickers*

I hope you enjoyed the breakdown, even though it has been some time since I last wrote one. Before I finish though, there are still a few formalities that we need to get out of the way first, such as, the caption contest.

Here is this week’s screen.

*Insert caption here*

I hope you guys have fun with this one. I can already think of a few ideas myself, so let’s see how this turns out.

Last, but not least, here is the preview for next week’s episode.

Well, that’s it from me.

See you all in the comments! ^ ^

  1. FIRST!!!

  2. Damn you, pein.

  3. Nice Breakdown Tenrai, long time no see on the Breakdown side 🙂

I haven’t been able to finish the episode yet been distracted by something completely different @_@

  4. mwahahahaha 😛

  5. @Pein0Avenue

That was a very random evil laugh. It worries me. O_o

The midair 69 position. You’re doing it wrong…

  6. Great breakdown Tenrai!

This episode was so gay. You should put yaoi and shounen-ai in the tags… X_X
I was laughing the whole episode for many reasons: Tenten thinking anyone cares about what she thinks, Gai “surprising” Kakashi and “checking if he has any wounds”, Kakashi’s short speech after Gai congratulated him and Lee’s reaction… LOL.

By the way, next week there’s Sasuke only appearance in two years! It’s sure taking him a lot to get used to Itachi’s eyes… 😛

  7. Great job Tenrai, these was truly what I would like to see in a filler in naruto. The humor was great and it blended in perfectly.

“Pigeon boy” that was so funny :)).

  8. Caption: If Homer’s Spider Pig can do it so can I, roar my youth.

  9. Very nice breakdown, Senshi. I thoroughly enjoy this episode, no matter how filler it was. Truth be told, this was probably the best filler episode I’ve seen in, like, a year and a half. Anyways, good job as always, Senshi. (:

  10. @Everyone

Thanks for the possitive comments. ^ ^

    Look, it’s a bird! No, it’s a plane! No wait! It’s…

    … our new Hokage. -____-

  11. This was definitely a funny episode, and a type of filler that works well with the main storyline. Frankly, I’m hoping they can’t do anymore actual multi-episode storyline fillers, since we’re now on the road to approaching the big climax of the series.

It would seem increasingly out of place for Naruto and company to suddenly be sent on a random mission to a random land that we’ll never hear of again; especially when everyone is preparing for war and the need to protect Naruto from the Akatsuki is high priority.

It still bugs me that it’s taking Sasuke sooooo long just to become fully used to Itachi’s eyes. I mean really? Madara popped out his Izanagi’d Sharingan eye and plugged in Nagato’s Rinnegan, and was ready just like that! And even if his powers had something to do with the very low recovery time, there should be no reason for it to take this long for Sasuke to be ready.

Kishi is certainly milking the suspense for all it’s worth. And of course, there’s still the final Naruto vs Sasuke battle, so Naruto would have to survive this war one way or another.

My guess is that Madara will pretty much use the Nine-Tailed Fox’s chakra from the Kinkaku (sp?) brothers and somehow capture Bee. He’ll still be able to achieve his Eye of the Moon plan and summon the Juubi. I’m thinking that anyone with a powerful enough Sharingan (Sasuke) will be able to resist the Eternal Tsukiyomi. The power that Itachi gave Naruto could also give him the power to resist it, leaving the battlefield wide open for Naruto and Sasuke.

As for how Madara would be finally defeated and the Juubi stopped, I’m in the dark about that.

  12. Caption: This is your youth on drugs.

  13. This is probably one of the best episodes that includes filler I’ve seen in a while. I laughed so hard when these two supposedly grown up men ran like banchees through Konoha.

And what a climax – Tsunade’s awakening. Woo HOO!

  14. Seeing as how Kantonkage has posted the only caption so far, it looks like he is going to win.

    (My captions don’t count)

Common guys, I thought you could do better than that. <_<

  15. A very interesting and funny breakdown Tenrai. I love the EAT HIM option on the vote poll. rotfl.
Inasmuch, it is great to see you back up and writing again. ^^

  16. Caption: Kakashi doesn’t cheat, he justs allows you to lose with various means. <_<

  17. “Caption: If Homer’s Spider Pig can do it so can I, roar my youth.”

I like Mark’s better. But I also posted a caption Tenrai, don’t make me give you indigestion.

  18. Nice breakdown! This is a feel-good filler but it still pains me to see the destruction of Konoha, a village hidden in the leaves no more.

Caption: Kakashi Rickroll’d – “You wouldn’t get this from any other Gai…”

  19. CAPTION: Now you’re thinking with PORTALS!

  20. @lousytv – Looks more like the Village Hidden in the Crater! XD

  21. Caption: It’s Gai love,
    Don’t compromise,
The feelings of some other Gai,
    Holding up your heart,
    Into the sky…

Can anyone guess what show that’s from?

  22. @Dragon: Turk and JD FOREVER!!!!! 😀

  23. So sorry for spamming.. It’s just that the Scrubs moment blindsided me a bit.

So frickin late but: Welcome back Tenrai!!! Thank you for the breakdown. Aesome as always. It’s been a long wait but well worth it.

  24. @Orange

Thanks. Too bad there isn’t a new aninme release from last week. It’s like a blow to my newfound momentum. T____T

  25. @Orange: Scrubs FTW!!

Seriously, Turk=Kakashi and J.D.=Gai. There’s a bromance between them. XD

  26. I think I need to see this Episode >_> <_<

  27. The new episode is out.
