Naruto Shippuuden 137 Breakdown. Fighting fire with fire… *_-

Hey everyone, and welcome to yet another weekly Naruto anime breakdown.

This weeks episode sees the battle between Sasuke and Itachi heating up a bit (quite literally) and we also get some added insight in the form of Zetsu, who takes on a far more descriptive role to make sure us simple minded folk no exactly who’s blowing fire at who.

For all our high expectations, I can say that for the most part this episode delivered and, even without the enhanced animation that is sometimes used, it still looked very impressive to behold.

See!!! I told you that you were gonna poke someone's eye out. I'm telling mom!!! T__T

So, in theory, we have everything we need to make an awesome episode of action packed goodness handed to us right on a platter. I think by now we all know the basic ingredients of a Naruto episode of this kind and that would be awesome action, great music, impressive jutsu and the typical flashbacks that we have come to expect.

Naruto awesomeness episode checklist: Do we have it all?

Awesome action? Check!!!
Dramatic music? Check!!!
Massive-scale jutsu? check!!!
Flashbacks? Che…. Hey wait, where are the flashbacks? O__O

And so, we finally manage to make it through an entire battle episode without a single flashback. It almost makes me wonder if I just overlooked it. X__X

It don't matter if you're black and white...

Anyway, enough of my blabbering. As far as the episode goes, things pretty much start where they left of without delay where Itachi decides that plucking out Sasuke’s eyes sounds like a fun idea.

It was pretty gross, but I guess that’s what happens in a battle like this, but luckily for Sasuke, he soon realizes it is all in his head and with some extra power from his cursed seal, he is able to break even the Tsukyomi’s hold on himself.

Like any weapon, the Sharingan's strength is measured by the one wielding it.

Now, I found this particular explanation by Zetsu’s own words to be particularly interesting and I think it is something we all need to take into consideration.

A shinobi’s jutsu and abilities, no matter what they are or how impressive they are in theory, are only as strong as the one wielding them. We’ve seen good examples of this in the series before like, for example, where Naruto used to spam his Kage Bunshin and just hurl them at the enemy en masse.

It was a more simple and inexperienced use of what is considered an otherwise very high level jutsu, compared to how much more effectively he uses even fewer numbers nowadays simply by thinking outside the box. It also shows us that even the strongest attacks are only effective if they are used correctly, while what can be considered to be far more simple attacks can be used to great devastation.

Urgh... That doesn't sound good. <_<

The above screen is a good example of that fact. The strength of a jutsu is largely based on how much power you can put into it or how well you use it and even a lower level jutsu can overcome something of a far higher class.

In the same manner Sasuke’s Sharingan managed to overcome Itachi’s Mangekyou Sharingan in this particular case.

A lot of debates have also been fought, where those involved try to use a person’s jutsu arsenal to back their argument as the sole factor and even I am guilty of that. However, a true shinobi can win a battle even if the odds are against them and if there is anything we have learned, Itachi is one such shinobi.

Escape velocity reached. Exiting atmosphere. O__O

Of course, that doesn’t mean he can’t still blow things up with a big bang, despite his setbacks. XD

The battle gets even more impressive the further it goes and I have to comment the animators on just how impressive the jutsu looked. It really was a pleasure to watch and explosions are always fun. ^ ^

That notion is further enhanced when Itachi’s Amatarasu comes into play…

Fighting fire with... emo fire... X__X

While Sasuke’s inferior katon jutsu clashes with Itachi’s awe inspiring Emotarasu, Zetsu gives a nice explanation about how the black flames consume anything that Itachi sets his eyes en, even fire itself.

For it to be able to consume something that doesn’t even have a physical form is, in itself, very impressive.

It also makes you wonder if that means it can also consume all forms of energy and mass, like lighting or even air? Would it consume a Rasenshuriken?

No, I will not lose!!!! I will not blink until my eyes fall out!!! (Itachi took the innocent staring contest a little too seriously). X__X

After consuming the very flames that sought to incinerate him, Itachi turn his eyes on his next target and we all know how bad that is for the poor soul falling under his gaze.

I actually wondered why he was having such a hard time hitting Sasuke if all he had to do was focus on him, but then I remembered just how bad his eyesight was. It also made me realize just how dangerous the jutsu would be if Itachi was at his prime with his vision still intact.

Sasuke shows Itachi that he isn't the only one with impressive looking jutsu. (No pun intended).

However, despite the seemingly successful hit, it is quickly discovered that Sasuke had safely managed to escape and gain ample time to form a counter attack.

I wonder if the big flaming dragon gave it away. <_<

After that, both combatants admit that they have already run out of chakra, leaving it open as to whom could win the battle, but a wry smile from Sasuke tells us that he has something up his sleeve and he quickly confirms that suspicion with a declaration of victory, as he announces the arrival of his most deadly attack.

Ominous storm clouds fall across the sky, enshrowding the sun's gaze in a dreadful, heart wrenching darkness. In such a show of anger and dread, even the wind dares to whisper of the cruel fate yet to come to pass as the battle draws closer to its end.

And that pretty much sums up this episode.

With a consistent pace, a surprising lack of flashbacks and very little time stretching, I can’t really fault it in any way. However, it did stick largely to the manga this time around, for better or for worse, so for those who read the chapters weekly, it may not bring anything new to the plate that they weren’t already expecting.

However, it is still good to see such a great battle in motion, so I hope you all enjoyed it.

Now for the winner of last weeks caption contest. There were actually three that caught my attention, so I will have a second and third place as well. ^ ^

Caption contest winners:

3rd) Supertrek 89: THIS IS HOW YOU DO IT SASUKE! THIS HOW YOU FLY DAMMIT!!!

2nd) Mingoleung: this is my… HUMAN SHIELD! (I couldn’t help but laugh at this one, especially when you picture it happening in your mind).

Fanboi: Get in the kitchen and make your big bro a sandwich!

Well done to the top three. It just shows you how random you can be when you don’t put your mind to it. 😛

Now for this weeks screen.

*Insert caption here*

Thanks for reading everyone. I hope you enjoyed the breakdown. Here’s the preview for the next episode.

P.S. “Emotarasu” is copyrighted to me. 😛

Cheers! ^ ^

  1. First.

  2. Second!!

  3. Itachi was clearly holding back with his Amaterasu. If he’d let it all out, Sasuke would’ve never known what hit him.

  4. 4th or 3rd….. O_O

if emotsra can consume fire, does it consume oxygen to survive? but that more science.

  5. Great breakdown, good work!!!

Caption: “Turn on Mangekyou Sharingan, close right eye, mold chakra in your belly, do the six handsigns, aim, purse your lips, say “Katon: Goukakyuu no Jutsu” … God, this is so exhausting, I’m giving up!”

  6. Caption: Too much hot sauce >.<

  7. Caption: See Sasuke this is why father liked me better! A real man can take any amount of Hot peppers! As Deathcon4 said it best “GROW SO BALLS SASUKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!” >_<

  8. Great breakdown!!

  9. Caption: Napalm-because it smells good early in the morning.

  10. Caption:
Who are the 5 greatest Shinobi:Itachi, Itachi, Itachi, Itachi and Itachi; Cuz I Spit Hot Fire…lmao

    That’s a Chappelle Reference…

  11. I vote for Shinobi’s. 😀

  12. I enjoyed in this episode. Great action. I almost didn’t blink! 😆

Caption> This is my Burp, Sasuke! And I can do the Alphabet too!

  13. i never would have thought that Susano is red

  14. Great Breakdown as always =D

This Epi lived up to my expectations for the most part. I dont really like the idea of Amaterasu being able to consume everything. Its almost impossible to dodge also. I think Kishi made these MS techs a little too powerful = /

    Caption:

This is what happens when you hold a marijuana hit for more than 10 seconds…

  15. Great Breakdown Tenrai….but I have to disagree with you about this episode.

It was a pretty big letdown for me:
    1) No enhanced animation.
    2) No extra fight scenes like seen in the intro.
    3) The episode felt rushed.
    3) Stuck strictly to the manga.
    4) This episode ate through 3 MANGA CHAPTERS!!! They shouldve taken things slowly, used 2 chapters and added filler fight scenes and dialogue.

Remember the faster they go through these episodes, the faster the anime will catch up to manga and the faster we’ll see crappy filler episodes. Its far more entertaining to use filler fight scenes instead of actual filler episodes, especially in an epic battle such as this. In most of the major battles we see this (Jiraiya vs Pain, Sasori vs Sakura, Sasuke vs Deidara, Team 10 vs Immortals) and its made the battle THAT much more epic.

Im sorry but this battle felt SOOOO much more awesome in the manga.

Its nice to see everything in motion & color and everything but either I had my expectations too high or IDK.

    O well…..

  16. CAPTION: IMMA FIRIN’ MAH KATON !

  17. CAPTION: IMMA FIRIN’ MAH JOOTSOO !

*In case that looks and sounds funnier.*

  18. im with pumpkinbread on what the cap laked but i still like it they did leave us on the edge of the seat at the end. i think both skill and jutsu must be balance on a good nin cause what good is knowing how to trhow the pebble but not to evade the shuriken.lmao on 2nd place caption that was my no.1 pic above mine. ooh great breakdown tenrai as always!!! 😀

  19. @pumpkinbread21

I will agree with you in that I would have preferred more filler sequences in the battle, having read the manga, but you need to remember one thing.

When I write an anime breakdown, I am writing it for those who watch the anime, not for those who read the manga. I have to put myself in their shoes and try to see things from their point of view as well.

For someone who has never read the manga, this battle would be awesomeness. They wouldn’t care about what is filler and what isn’t, because they don’t see it that way. In the same breath, they won’t know whether it stuck to the manga or if it ate through three manga chapters, etc.

You said “Im sorry but this battle felt SOOOO much more awesome in the manga”. Now you need to ask yourself, if you had never read the manga, would you feel as disappointed in this episode?

    Maybe not….

You see, I have to avoid allowing my view of the manga to cause me to become biased towards the anime episodes, so although I will mention links where it is relative, I otherwise try not to let it sway my opinion.

  20. @ tenrai: I see. You have a point. I probably wouldve loved this battle if I hadnt alrady seen it.

Still for me it was missing that extra OOMPH…that IT factor that makes these battles awesome in anime…even if I HAVE seen it already.

Ah..w/e. Enough b*tching and whining on my part. It was still a good episode. lol

  21. did any body watch the naruto special with storm graphics it was awesome

    http://www.shonenjump.com/e/animetour/

    definitely worth the watch

  22. I just watched the special, and gotta say that that was AWESOMENEEEEEES!!! That’s really nostalgic seeing Naruto and Sasuke team up so perfectly in battle… and the “special ending” after the credits was………. hehee, *grin* !!!

  23. yea somebody should do a breakdown for that

  24. YOSH!!! Awesome Breakdown Tenrai! XD I haven’t read all the comments but I just want to say it was a good episode, felt really rushed, but it did well sticking to the manga. Can’t wait for next episode and what may be the conclusion of the Sasuke vs Itachi fight. o_O

  25. “Thing about being my brother, it don’t matter if you’re black or white!” *moonwalks*

    Great breakdown, Senshi!

    CAPTION

    1. Invisible Trainer: Itachi, use flamethrower!

Just had to let that one out =P.

    2. And if this doesnt kill Sasuke, the greenhouse effect that results will! Itachi is sooo evil…

  26. Caption:

Oh no! Chili… peppers… too hot!!

  27. Caption:

The roof, the roof, the roof is on fire… We don’t need no water let the fire burn!

    lol. I couldn’t resist. 😛

  28. The new episode is pretty much the same as the manga but is still awesome.I really liked susanoo’s depiction and Orochimaru is as disgusting as always.Anyways we have around 8-10 more episodes untill we see Killer Bee(woo-hoo) provided there are no fillers.I sure hope that if there are fillers eventually, they would be at least after the Pain invasion arc.

  29. I expect some filer before Pain arc.

This episode was good! I really enjoyed every second of that show!
Awesome! But I too didn’t expect to see susano red…some how i imagine it orange/yellow. Like fire.

Caption> We didn’t start the fire
    It was always burning
    Since the world’s been turning
    We didn’t start the fire
    No we didn’t light it
But we tried to fight it

    😆

  30. ohhh~not again filler…i was hoping they wouldn’t go for it because i hate fillers…they are ruining the plot…damn and the Pain arc will be awesome 🙂

  31. Caption: Even with one eye i still spit fire…

Caption:I can’t be beat, because im one of 5 who make Captain Planet..

  32. @cumulusbg

    Lol! Nice… ^ ^
